Scouts & Guides
Scouting arrived in NSW around 1908.
Swimming was just one of the outdoor activities that involved Scouts and
Guides. Both movements saw swimming as a survival skill, as well as a
competitive sport.
There was strong support for the Scouts and Guides in the Illawarra. In the
days of segregated bathing, Wollongong Council allowed Guides to stage
swimming carnivals at the Men's Baths. District swimming carnivals were a
memorable part of scouting in the Illawarra into the 1930s.
At Dee Why in the 1930s, the scouts held their meetings in the clubhouse of
the Ladies Amateur Swimming Club.
