1970 to 1987
Environmental consciousness was growing and environmental legislation was
enacted at Commonwealth and State levels.
The growth of surf board riding and scuba diving helped foster interest in
conservation of the coastal environment and marine life.
Even so, discharges from the ocean outfalls for Sydney's sewerage system continued to pollute the Eastern Suburbs, Northern
Beaches and Cronulla beaches.
Australian swimming success at the Munich Olympics fuelled interest in
competitive swimming. Elite swimmers now trained in filtered Olympic
baths and sought the assistance of professional coaches.
Australian women's rights to equal pay for equal work were recognised in
1972.
A decline in membership and growing acceptance of equal rights for women saw surf
clubs admit women as full members in 1980. Women's involvement in winter
swimming also increased.
