Educating - water skills, social skills & environmental appreciation
Ocean baths are places where children and adults acquire general water skills
as well as specific skills relating to swimming, diving, scuba, water-polo
and lifesaving
along with
social skills and an appreciation of the inter-tidal environment.
Learning to swim and be safe in the sea has long been seen as an
important part of the education of children living in or visiting coastal
communities in NSW. Since the 1890s, the ocean pools have featured in learn-to-swim campaigns
organised by government and non-government organisations.
