Entrepreneurial business people played less of a role than public
subscriptions, working bees, councils and government grants in creating
ocean baths. The few entrepreneurs associated with ocean baths include:
- H. A Wylie, who leased the site for an ocean pool at Coogee directly from the
Department of Lands for Wylies Baths, which he and his family constructed
and operated,
-
Giles Baths at Coogee, which operated as part of a gym complex, and
- developer C. R. Staples who built the Pearl Beach Pool as an added
attraction to potential land buyers.
Proprietors of kiosks, coffee shops, cafes, bar and hotels have
benefited from being located near ocean baths, as have other tourism and
hospitality businesses. For these reasons, business organisations such as
Chambers of Commerce have often been strong supporters of ocean baths.
