Children
Children are seen as important patrons of most ocean baths. Ocean baths
designated as children's baths were usually
shallow and more protected from wave action than the ocean pools intended
for adult use.
The nineteenth century Ladies Baths at Kiama's Pheasant Point had a separate
children's pool.
As gender-segregated bathing declined and men took more interest in
teaching children to swim or to become accustomed to the ocean, baths once
reserved solely for men acquired wading pools. Wading pools could be
separate from the main pool or adjacent to it.
Separate children's pool were created at Little Austinmer, at North
Bondi, Newcastle, Terrigal and Ballina.
Pools of the ring-of-rocks type, which cater for bathing rather than
competitive swimming, are also considered suitable for children.
