Ocean baths with heritage significance for the gay community include the
Newcastle Bogey Hole and the Giles Baths at Coogee.
Amid descriptions of Coogee's McIvers baths as a 'lesbian lair' in 1990s, Mrs Doris Hyde,
then president of the Coogee LASC, said she had never 'seen anything
untoward' at the baths. Later, she commended the pool's lesbian patrons as
'the nicest girls' and 'the ones who'll put the men out'.
Web sites promote
McIvers Baths as an attraction to lesbian
travellers and those baths are considered part of the lesbian community heritage.
