After WWII, motels developed to cater for the motor car travellers. This
new form of accommodation offered more privacy than guest-houses, hotels,
caravan parks and camping grounds.
In the 1960s, when the river baths at Coffs Harbour were too polluted for
swimming and there were no alternative public baths in Coffs Harbour or
nearby Sawtell, local school children had learn-to-swim classes in motel
pools.
Some motels still promote proximity to the local ocean baths as a visitor
attraction.
