Threats to the continued operation, the maintenance or the water quality
of ocean baths and the temporary or extended closure of ocean baths have
inspired public protests and demonstrations as well as many letters to
newspapers and to local and State politicians. Swimming clubs, winter
swimming clubs and Progress Associations have been prominent in campaigns to
create and enhance ocean baths.
Community campaigning for restoration of Wylies Baths at Coogee lasted
decades. Community campaigns to ensure continued operation of The Entrance
Ocean Baths achieved funding and State Heritage recognition for the Baths.
When Wollongong Council sought to close several little-used ocean baths,
community opposition and recognition of heritage values limited the pool
closures.
