Shipwrecks
The NSW coast is littered with shipwrecks. Those near ocean baths
include:
- the SS City of Newcastle at the Newcastle Bogey Hole,
- HMAS Voyager and the Huskisson sea pool set in Voyager Park, which
was created as a memorial to that disaster,
- the SS Merimbula and the Currarong pools, and
- the Queen of Nations and the Towradgi pool.
Some shipwrecks predated the baths and served as tourist attractions drawing
people to visit and later to settle in particular areas as at Collaroy and
Maroubra and eventually to create ocean baths. In other cases, the ocean
baths predated the shipwreck, as was the case with the Newcastle Bogey Hole
and the SS City of Newcastle.
Divers visiting some wrecks use the ocean baths as landmarks.
