'Trick' or 'fancy swimming' by men and women was popular in nineteenth and
early twentieth century NSW. A few ocean baths have a strong association with
synchronised swimming, which developed as a women's sport. Annette Kellerman
is seen as this sport's main 'founding mother'.
Aquacades staged under the guidance of Isabel Lethem were once a feature of life at the Freshwater Baths on
Sydney's northern beaches. Freshwater club members competed at the first World
Aquatic Championship in synchronised swimming held in Belgrade in 1973 and the
first FINA Junior World Championship held in Cali, Columbia in 1989.
